Perdot - August Birthstone

Perdot - August Birthstone
Peridot, a volcanic gem, is the birthstone for the month of August and the anniversary gemstone for the 16th year of marriage. This bright yellow-green to green gemstone has caught the fancy of humans for thousands of years. Many people wear the stone because it is supposed to bring the wearer success, peace, and good luck! Historically, important deposits of peridot were found on the volcanic island of St. Johns, about 24 miles off the cost of Egypt. Peridot was mined from this location for over 3500 years but forgotten for many centuries and rediscovered only around 1900. Beautiful material is also found in the serpentine quarries in upper Burma (Myanmar). Other deposits have been found in Australia, Brazil, China, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania and Arizona.

Peridot was brought to Central Europe by the crusaders in the Middle Ages, and was often used for ecclesiastical purposes. It was the most popular stone during the Baroque period. Popular are table and step cuts; sometimes also brilliant cut, especially when set in gold.

The largest cut peridot weighs 319ct and was found on the island Zabagad; it is in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. In Russia, there are some cut peridots which came out of a meteorite that fell in 1749 in eastern Siberia.

You don’t have to travel to exotic locations to find exquisite peridot. The mines on Peridot Mesa, near the Apache town of San Carlos are among the largest deposits in the world of this bright green gem. Peridot is a natural, untreated gem, and is richly complemented by High Karat Yellow Gold. While not commonly seen in Arizona jewelry stores, Rakhman Jewelers has a wonderful selection of Arizona Peridot for your viewing pleasure!
